We had the vintage cars out at the Lynch Motor Sports show on Sat. 5/9/09 Bumped into a few former IRA ers. Was thrilled to see Dick Aissen, Bob Roosa and Bill Klein. All got to see Allen Kautz's #16 and Pop's #60 and Johnny's A3 again, all cars that they competed with. Bob brought along some of his photo's for me to scan, so look for a Roosa page soon! What a thrill to finally make contact with Dick Aissen, we'll have a Aissen page as well! Bill Klein is a local Burlington IRA Legend who we bump into on occasion. I have a Klein page already and we continue to encourage him to spruce up his last Frings Super Mod and join us at the shows!
This Sat June 6th will be a 2 for 1 for the VMSC Group. The Westosha Baptist Church car show from 9 am till 3pm and then the quick trip to Wilmot to show the cars in the Grandstand area for the second IRA race of the year back at Wilmot. Gates open at 5pm and 15 Vintage cars will be on hand to jog your memories of days gone by. As usual Pop's car is open for the youngster to take a seat. And as usual some Mom's and Dad's are sure to jump in as well!! Bring your cameras!!
Last nights Slinger reunion was a whole bunch of fun! The majority of the former drivers came from the MSC ranks but some notable IRA drivers were among them. Aaron Solsrud, Bob Robel, Allen Kautz, Larry Ninneman and Tom Teaters to name a few. I've been trading emails with Tom Teaters who is actively searching for his late 70's ride. Tom planned on just stopping by to give me a few pictures to scan for the web site. We talked him into joining us for a few hours. Tom reluctantly agree to stay. Looked like he had a great time showing his scrap book to all the VMSC members and then bumping into some of his old freinds once inside the gates. Not unexpectantly Tom got a new lead on the wereabouts of his car in less then 5 minutes from parking his car! Great seeing Larry Ninneman as well. Larry, his brother Randy and nephew stopped out . 6/15/09
More updates to Smokin Joe's page! Joe also sent me some 1978 IRA Program scans that point to Gary Dye as the true 1978 IRA Overall Champion. Could this finally be the last word??? 6/16/09

Some will return on Fair night the 22nd as well!! On the Aug 7th the VMSC club wil take a road trip to Central Wisconsin Raceway at Unity Wi. (Formerly Monster Hall) Sound's like we may be bumping into Paul Cameron in person!! 20 guy's have expressed interest in renting the track on Saturday the 8th!! Zoom Zoom Zoom!!!! 7/24/09 |
Had a great time at Wilmot last night! Vintage fans got a treat in watching some familiar names take both B-Mains and the A-Main! Darrell Dodd and Smokin Joe Symoens took the B-mains while Tommy Sexton Jr. out horsed the field to take the A-main! Great Show!!! Chatted with Jim Uttech, John Tierney, Smokin Joe, Sexton Jr, Bill Schaffer Jr and gave Darrell a wave while moving Pop's old Mod through the Pits after the show. Also saw Jr. Dodd, Roger ILes, Jimmy Hedges and DIck Colburn moving about the grandstand area. Hope to get a few Vintage mod's back in the grandstand area for Fair night! 8/2/09
The VMSC group traveled to Central Wisconsin Raceway in Unity WI for a Friday night show. Unfortunetly mother nature had other ideas. The group rented the track on Sat starting at 10am. CWR officials spent hours trying to prep the wet track but finally at 1pm open wheelers started taking laps on the track. Looked like a good time was had by all. Fred Zack even stopped by to see some of the old familiar cars throw some dirt! On Sunday 4 cars stayed for the Abbotsford car show. Many people hadn't seen cars like ours ever race in that area so many stopped by to look at the cars. Surprisingly Cal Maule, Bob Zinda, Doug Wolf and our car all won trophies for our extra effort. Sandy and Paul Cameron made the trip from Wausaw to Abbotsford to come say hello. A couple weeks back I received a couple of their racing scrap books to scan and add to the site. Had a nice couple hour chat with them about the good old days of racing. Paul raced starting in 59 till he retired from the track in 1974. The Camerons still enjoy racing as their granddaughter Cheyenne was a nationally recognized dirt cart racer and now runs street stocks at Wausaw area tracks. 8/10/09
Got an email this morning from Bill Portalski. He finally found some of his personal pictures of some of his former IRA rides and sent them my way. One was especially fun for me to see. Check the driver pages. Thanks Bill 8/19/09
Well, the 2009 Kenosha County Fair race is in the books with the Roger Iles family owned #36 takin the A-Main. Todd Daun did a masterful job of getting the car to the front and keeping it there! Plenty of former IRAers around as well! Roger Iles, Jr.Dodd, John Tierney, Jim Moulis, Bob Roosa, and Ray Faulkner were in attendance. There were also a couple former IRA Champions out in the pits as well. 4 time Champ Gib Wiser and 3 time Champ Dick Colburn were both wrenching for the evenings events. Not surprisingly both will be inducted into the Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Hall of Fame this fall!!! 8/23/09
The Hall of Fame car show is set for tomorrow 9/19/09 at the Wisconsin Auto Museum. I'll be there with some new tee shirts for sale. Looks like we'll head to the Dodge County fair grounds for the evenings IRA race! Should be displaying in the grandstand area while there. Hope to see you there!!
The Hartford and Dodge County Fairground shows were great! Excellent weather brought out plenty of vintage fans and lots of fun was had by all. One highlight for me was a visit from a gentleman who I've been trying contact for quite some time. I looked here and there only to have been told that he had passed away. This ghost from IRA's passed walked up to John Surges at the Hartford show and introduced himself. John knew how thrilled I would be to talk with him so he brought him over to say hi. Some of us remember him as the "The Bristol Bullet" or simple "Billy the Kid" but we found Bill Bohn to be alive and well!!! Had a quick chat with him just as we were packing up to get to Dodge County, wish we would have had more time! Bill was one of the original IRA Board of Director and he agreed with the news articles I tracked down and told us about the trips to Whitey's house to get the ball rolling with the creation of the IRA. Bill said he had plenty of pictures and we hope to make a connection some time soon to add them here! Thanks for tracking us down Bill!! 9/20/09
